    Dear colleagues,

Today the governments of the world’s leading countries are acutely aware of the role that sport plays in the life of the state, society and the individual. Sport is often described as a socio-economic phenomenon of the early 21st century and a crucial element of the human value system.

One of the decisive factors in ensuring the development of the modern sports industry is a strong regulatory framework governing social relations in this area. This body of law has been commonly referred to as sports law.

Many countries are now putting great effort into strengthening their sports legislation and enforcement practices. But no effective regulations or practices can be created without the use of scientific tools and the latest developments in the theory of law. In this context, the academic community must take on the responsibility to create the science of sports law which would help to understand the specifics of sports regulation and accumulate new knowledge in this area.

In this context, the academic community must take on the responsibility to create the science of sports law which would help to understand the specifics of sports regulation and accumulate new knowledge in this area.

One way to achieve this is by holding regular scientific and practical conferences in which participants could exchange legal and legislative experience in the area of sports, and develop scientifically informed recommendations for improving sports regulation.

The Russian International Olympic University has decided to make its own contribution by organising its inaugural international conference “Mega events in sport: the legal environment”, and co-organising the 22nd Congress of the International Association of Sports Law (IASL).

I am pleased to invite everyone who is involved in sport and wants to contribute to its development to attend these events to be held on November 17-19, 2016 on the RIOU campus in Sochi at 11 Ordzhonikidze Street.

I have no doubts that holding these high-profile gatherings in post-Olympic Sochi will help to consolidate the work of leading Russian and international researchers, experts, and sports law practitioners, allowing them to develop common approaches to addressing current issues in sports legislation.

Sport is an integral part of the life of the global community in its current state of intensive cross-border interactions. The complex area of sports law comprises a wide range of legal problems and i<>nvolves close cooperation of leading experts in the theory of law and specialised disciplines such as constitutional law, labour law, civil law, administrative and criminal law, and civil procedure law.

The conference will address the need to overcome the lack of communication between legal researchers and practitioners in different countries, and to develop principles of effective cooperation. This in turn will raise levels of professionalism in the industry and contribute to the development of sports law as a legal science on the international scale. Increased interest in this branch of law will undoubtedly help to find ways of reconciling disputes and resolving issues that arise in sport.

There are, of course, many organisational, regulatory and other problems that sports law has yet to solve. But I look to the future with hope, and I am confident that the conference will provide a forum for a fruitful exchange of knowledge and expertise in this area.
